Mission Statement
The ASSN seeks and supports the advancement of the principles of democratic governance of the security sector in Africa. In doing so, it facilitates security sector reform/transformation in Africa and develops security literacy in the continent vis-à -vis a wider understanding of security issues by the African continent’s policy-makers, decision-makers, parliamentarians, academics, civil society and the general public.
Positioning Statement
The ASSN promotes democratic governance of the security sector as well as the effective management of the security establishments through the undertaking of its core competencies in the areas of capacity building, development of security literacy through training and education, advocacy, dissemination of applied research materials and facilitation of other emerging networks. It does so with the overall view of sharing information and offering its capacity to advise and facilitate security policy-making processes, aiming to contribute to the strengthening of the peace and security agendas of the AU, NEPAD and regional organisations, as well as those of national governments, upon request.
